Valleys mam..

a comment from Valleys Mam said...

I notice that you list women bloggers in Wales
I have been blogging for three months but I note you have not included me is there a reason for that .
I am female resident in the Valleys and Welsh My blog is a mix of political and items of interest I have a link to u on it -it would be good if you returned the link

I feel queasy about the title Valleys Mam....doesn't exactly portray a feminist perspective. Sounds more blokish. I think women in the 'valleys' are already viewed negatively by cardiff folk.

She's a Mam and lives in Merthyr, hence the name. Nothing dodgy in that, surely? Read her interview on Normal Mouth's blog - http://normalmouth.blogspot.com/2007/07/questions-to-welsh-political-blogger-3.html

to the contrary a valleys mother is a strong female role model
Very matriachal.
This blogger is very feisty and very feminist
What a very parochial and sexist comment you make

The image of mam and child is a masuline model, the identification with the paternal side condemns the mother as an authority without any actual power. Many feminists would say that intellectual women’s emancipation and motherhood were totally opposed to each other. Christian iconography similar to the figure of the mam and child in the blog emphasizes the notion of the perfect mother as somebody who prostrates herself before her male offspring.

what happended to solidarity with other women, i don't know Valleys Mam but it is a widely read blog and i along with a number of women read and enjoy it,we should be encouraging women onto the blogsphere.

maybe if Cardiff Labour Women
are so worried by the stereotypes they should get better female AM's
in the valleys, people like Lynne Neagle and Irene James hardly do Valleys women any favours.

I am definately NOT a Cardiff Labour woman or any sort of labour woman! I WAS a member of the labour party for many decades but have no time for hypocrites or tribal politics. Stereotyping is a serious issue - a major cause of discrimination, inequality and bullying against those who appear non middleclass - older women (think of tv presenters)& particularly those who are disabled. Women are so often not taken seriously....
oh and you could have a look at

IMO women should be proud to be women and mothers, and wives and partners too if they are with the right man.
Nothing wrong with being a Valleys Mam or a Merched Merthyr.
Equality in every respect is good and natural, as is everything natural.

womensvoice said...

Everything natural isn't good and what is 'good' - how is it defined - any philosopher might question that? Equality - are we talking Ronald Dworkin and Thomas Nagel or Rawls’ definition?
And as for equality in Wales, who is working for that ? The demise of CRE, EOC and DRC leading to the formation of CEHR IN Wales rather than a WELSH CEHR is indictive of an alternative direction to the government of wales Act and so what do you alun in dyfed and valleys mam think of that and also the
further dilution and weakening of the womens equality strand?

I think that feminism has many angles - political social cultural and personal.
I too have read and studied all the various aspects –I have a masters degree to show for it, so academically informed. Growing up and battling a patriarchal valleys mentality was a good tutor – my saving, strong women mentors including a few valleys mams who would knock spots of the likes of Betty Friedan and Mary Daly et al. I agree with Anon – its solidarity that counts not rhetoric.
Mother image is one of the strongest female and feminist images to me. Matriarchal is as strong and legitimate as patriarchal
My feminism is about women as women I do not define it in terms of men -that defeats the object totally
Decline of the various equal opportunities quangos - well to me they did little for women especially women who were not middle class, professionals, articulate or employed. So a waste of money
What did they actually achieve apart from papers and spin? How far on are we as women in Wales –not that far still.
Now set up a grassroots inspired organisation run by and informed by its true constituency and then I can see some point. To achieve true equality it has to win hearts and minds and that needs to be a strong ground swell that inspires and is causal.

Oh dear - Wrong, wrong, wrong...its about power..POWER..and it is about doing something. However it is NOT about a mass movement ...It only takes a few determined people to achieve social change..Minority influence refers to a smaller number of people influencing and changing the opinions of a majority. Did you ever hear of this example which occurred in the early years of the 20 th century, when a small minority of women called suffragettes argued for women's right to vote, and finally their view was accepted by the majority? Now then...mam

Wrong wrong wrong
Who says -is it only power for a few
There were quite a mass of suffragettes too but again only the middle class ones were heard of
What use women's movement that excludes most women?
You are doing the men's job for them creating another elite and increasing inequality.
Feminism is about empowering all women and building the voice of the movement.
What use a few privileged feminists gaining control ......... they revert to male constructs Look at what's happened to the ones who were "sisters" and are now at the Assembly ............nuff said
