Tesco wants to appear ethical?

Designer Katharine Hamnett is to terminate a deal to supply organic and fair trade clothing to Tesco. The deal, which was one of a number of high-profile initiatives designed to boost Tesco's green credentials, has collapsed after only a year."I was initially really excited about the tie-up because I thought we could increase demand for ethical products," says Ms Hamnett in an interview published in Drapers, the fashion industry's trade magazine, today. "But I've come to the conclusion that [Tesco] simply wants to appear ethical, rather than make a full commitment to the range."A spokesman for Tesco said, “She really helped us understand how to transfer our existing knowledge of organics and fair trade into clothing but she is wrong to question our commitment. It's been an exciting year during which we have introduced many new organic and fair trade lines…”--
