Severn Barrage
I have been told that there is a better alternative + The government's love for big,
expensive projects means that is neglects completely the idea of tidal
lagoons in the estury and Swansea bay, which could generate the same amount
of electricity taking up a fraction of the area, not blocking off the estury
itself and having minimal impact on wildlife. There was a presentation on
this at Swansea conference which made any idea look silly in comparison.

Letter: bewildering that Friends of the Earth are in opposition to this scheme on the grounds of damage to wildlife in the estuary. This could be a serious mistake. In my opinion (and that of the Government's chief scientist) global warming is the chief threat to mankind. And melting icecaps will not just end our way of life but destroy the environment of the birdlife in the estuary anyway.

23 Sep 2007 The United States Air Force has set up a highly confidential strategic planning group tasked with "fighting the next war" as tensions rise with Iran. Project Checkmate, a successor to the group that planned the 1991 Gulf War’s air campaign, was quietly reestablished at the Pentagon in June. It reports directly to General Michael Moseley, the US Air Force chief, and consists of 20-30 top air force officers and defence and cyberspace experts with ready access to the White House, the CIA and other intelligence agencies.

Despite an intensive campaign aimed at keeping people away, and provocative policing on the day, up to 15,000 people come out on September 8, asserting their right to protest against US President George Bush and Australian Prime Minister John Howard. Hundreds of highschool students chanting “Troops out now!” joined with hundreds of trade unionists chanting “The workers united will never be defeated!” ensuredthat the crowd swelled onto George Street, sending the riot police scampering to take up new positions in front of their mobile prison buses.

Stark message for parties in green report
A coalition of nine leading environmental charities has produced a report rating each of the UK's three main political parties on their environmental credentials ahead of the party conference season.
The report, How Green Are Our Parties? The Green Standard Report, bases its assessment on criteria developed earlier this year by the coalition, which consists of the Campaign to Protect Rural England, Friends of the Earth, the Green Alliance, Greenpeace, the National Trust, the RSPB, The Wildlife Trusts, the Woodland Trust and WWF-UK.
It finds that none of the parties has yet implemented policies and action “on the scale required to meet the range and urgency of the environmental threats we face”.
It rates the Liberal Democrats most highly, but describes the gap between Conservative aspirations and policy commitments as “stark”. Green Alliance director Stephen Hale said the charities were disappointed by the findings. “The environmental ambitions of the parties are very welcome, but the environmental beauty contest between them has, to date, been characterised by too much spin.”
A spokeswoman for the Charity Commission said there was nothing in charity law to prevent charities from trying to influence the policies of political parties in the interests of their beneficiaries. “As long as the trustees of these charities are confident that this activity furthers the objects, then this is perfectly legitimate activity for them to engage in,” she said

WELSH Labour’s performance during and immediately after the National Assembly election has been torn apart in an expert study.
Turning to events after the election, Jones and Scully write, “Labour’s election campaign was poor, but its performance during the post- election interregnum often bordered on the inept.
“In defence of Rhodri Morgan, however, it may be suggested that much of Welsh Labour’s problem is cultural, even psychological. Labour has long been the hegemonic party in Welsh politics, its dominance in terms of votes being underpinned and reinforced by innately disproportional electoral systems. And large and influential sections of the Welsh Labour party remain resolutely ‘in denial’ about the implications of devolution and its semi-proportional electoral system.”
The report adds, “ The many Welsh Labour parliamentarians who remain utterly unreconciled either to coalition with Plaid or devolution retain a significant capacity for mischief making.”

Fremantle is the Aylesbury-based "non-profit" outfit that was handed care of Barnet's elderly by the borough's Tory council. Some "charity" this is, sacking staff if they won't take pay cuts, taking away sick pay and holidays, getting rid of their union rep, and wielding legal threats to stop protest.
The GOOD NEWS is that by the time the legal threat took effect over 8,000 people around the world had already sent messages to Fremantle demanding fair treatment for its workers.

When does extending party democracy mean exactly the opposite? When New Labour want to curtail members rights and influence even further.
Suggested motion for New Labour CLPs. "We, the undersigned Constituency Labour Party Officers, are alarmed at the proposals in the document 'Extending Party Democracy', that would remove the right of CLP's to send motions to our annual conference. Rank and file Labour Party members must have the right and ability to influence and direct policy within their own party if the party is to have any claim to democratic legitimacy. We have mandated our delegates to oppose any proposals which would threaten this right, and call on all delegates to do the same."
Alarmed at last? Bit late now!

I note that new labour state that Deliveries due to security ... all vehicles, including courier deliveries, will need to assemble at the Remote Vehicle Search Site (RVSS) at Kings Park Coach Park (just off Kings Park Drive). We recommend you allow 6 hours to pass through RVSS before your event commences!!! Even protesters don't disrupt air travel or anything for quite that badly.
